Answer by stanbon(75887)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
during a recent telethon, people pledged $25 or $50.
twice as many people pledged $25 as $50. all together,
$18,000 was pledged. how many people pledged $25?
-----------
Let # of $50 pledges be "x" ; value of these is 50x dollars
------------
# of $25 pledges is "2x"; value of these is 25(2x)= 50x dollars
---------------
EQUATION:
value + value = 18000 dollars
50x + 50x = 18000
100x = 18000
x = 180 (# of $50 pledges)
2x = 360 (# of $25 pledges)
