is the ordered pair (-4,-1) a solution of equations? show me the work please.
x+y=3 and x-y=5
No it isn't, but (4,-1) is.
Here's why (4,-1) is a solution to both equations:
Substitute x=4 and y=-1 in x+y=3
4+(-1)=3
4-1=3
3=3 <-- That's true!
Substitute x=4 and y=-1 in x-y=5
4-(-1)=5
4+1=5
5=5 <-- That's also true!
That's why (4,-1) IS a solution.
-------------------------------------
Here's why (-4,-1) is NOT a solution:
Substitute x=-4 and y=-1 in x+y=3
-4+(-1)=3
-4-1=3
-5=3 <-- That's false!
Substitute x=4 and y=-1 in x-y=5
-4-(-1)=5
-4+1=5
-3=5 <-- That's also false!
That's why (-4,-1) IS NOT a solution.
