Question 105358: I am having a hard time with sovling the following problem. I need to solve the following system by addition.
2x-y=1 and -2x+3y=5
I have done the following:
2x-y=1
-2x+3y=5
-y=1
3y=5
2y/2=-4/2
y=-2
Now I dont understand how to solve for the x. And did I solve for the y correctly?

Solve by addtion:
2x-y = 1
-2x+3y = 5 Add the two equations and the x's dissapear leaving you with:

2y = 6 Divide both sides by 2.
y = 3 Now substitute this value of y into either one of the two original equations and solve it for x.
2x-y = 1
2x-3 = 1 Add 3 to both sides.
2x = 4 Divide both sides by 2.
x = 2
Check: Substitute x = 2 and y = 3 into the two given equations.
1st equation:
2x-y = 1
2(2)-3 = 1
4-3 = 1
1 = 1
2nd equation:
-2x+3y = 5
-2(2)+3(3) = 5
-4+9 = 5
5 = 5

2Y=6
Y=6/2
Y=3 ANSWER.
NOW SUBSTITUTE 2 FOR Y & SOLVE FOR X

-2X=5-9
-2X=-4
X=-4/-2
X=2 ANSWER.

2*2-3=1
4-3=1
1=1
