If the lady ends up with a dollar, then before that she had 1+3(bus fare) dollars, or $4.
Before that, 1/2 on a book, or $8;
8+$2 tip=10;
1/2 on lunch, or twice 10=20;
$1 to a beggar +20=$21;
Twice 21, or 42, represents what she had before buying hankies, gives us $42 as what she started out with. ☺☺☺☺
