Question 102805: I am having a dog of a time trying to solve these problems, please help me.
Write the equation of the line which passes through the point (2, 1) and is parallel to the line with equation y = 5/2x+6.
A line passing through (7, 17) and (5, y) is parallel to a line with slope 6. What is the value of y?
Find the slope of any line parallel to the line through points (9, 6) and (1, 2).
Find the slope of the line passing through the points (1, 2) and (3, 6).
please help me figure it out, thank you

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you find the slope of a line by dividing the change (difference) in the y values by the change (difference) in the x values

parallel lines have the SAME slope

the equation will be the same except for the y-intercept value (6)
find the new value by plugging the point into the equation ... 1=(5/2)(2)+? ... 1=5+(-4) ... y=(5/2)x-4

the slope is 6 ... if x changes -2 then y must change (-2)(6)=-12 ... 17-12=5 ... y=5

y changes 6-2 or 4 ... x changes 9-1 or 8 ... slope is 4/8 or 1/2

you can finish the last one
