divide 50 into two parts, so that the difference of the square each part is 2000.find each part.
:
Two parts, x and (50-x)
:
x^2 - (50-x)^2 = 2000
FOIL (50-x)(50-x)
x^2 - (2500 - 100x + x^2) = 2000
removing brackets changes the signs
x^2 - 2500 + 100x - x^2 = 2000
combine like terms
100x = 2000 + 2500
100x = 4500
x = 4500/100
x = 45 is one part and obviously, 5 is the other part
:
:
See if that checks out
45^2 - 5^2 =
2025 - 25 = 2000
