Question 970654: If the height of a trapezoid is 9 inches, the length of one of its bases is 8 inches, and its area is 63 square inches, what is the measure of the other base?
Answer by Boreal(15235)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A= (1/2)h (b1+b2)
Substitute
63 in^2= (1/2)*9in (8+b2)in the units are in^2 on both sides.
Multiply by 2
126=9 *(8+b2)
divide both sides by 9
14=8 + b2
subtract 8 from both sides
6=b2
The other base is 6 inches.
The average of the two bases, 6 and 8, is 7
Their sum is 14
14*9=126; half of that is the area, or 63. Check
