Question 831382: Hi! So I'm having problems with coordinates midpoint formula, midpoint of a segment. Sometimes I can figure them out, and sometimes I'm having HUGE problems like these two questions, who are actually pretty easy, but for some reasons I also keep getting the wrong answers, like I never get the answers who are listed for the question. It's like. ugh.
1. What is the midpoint of the segment with the endpoints (1, 8) and (–5, 10)?
a. (2, 1)
b. (–2, 1)
c. (–4, 2)
d. (–2, 9)
and here
2. The coordinates of the midpoint of MG are (3, 5). The coordinates of M are (0, 7). Using the midpoint formula of M-(x^1+x^2/2 , y^1+y^2/2) what are the coordinates of G?
a. (6, 3)
b. (–3, 9)
c. (1.5, 6)
d. (0, 0)
I don't know, I guess perhaps a little better explaining would help me?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If the coordinates of A and B are ( x1, y1) and ( x2, y2) respectively, then the midpoint, M, of AB is given by the following formula
( 1 , 8 ) ( -5 , 10 )
M(x,y) =
x= -2 ,y= 9
-------------
P(x,y) =
P(x,y)=(2,5)
M=(0,7)
2=(x1+2)/2
4=x1+2
x1=4-2
x1=2
5= y1+7)/2
10=y1+7
y1=10-7
y1=3
G=(2,3)
