Two pieces of wood.
One piece 9 inches shorter than the other.
One piece of wood = x
Shorter piece of wood = x - 9
x + (x - 9) = 55
Collect like terms
2x - 9 = 55
2x = 55 + 9
2x = 64
x = 32
One piece of wood = 32 inches.
Shorter piece of wood = 23 inches.
