Question 314938: a mirror 2ft by 6ft is to be mounted on a door so that there is a uniform edge between the mirror and the door all around the mirror. How wide will the edge between the mirror and the door be if the edge is 9 square feet?

In the above sketch,Internal rectangle is Mirror and Outer rectangle is Door.
Let the width of the uniform edge is x feet.
Hence, Area of the Edge= Area of Door - Area of Mirror
or 9= (2+2x)(6+2x)
or 4x^2+16x-9=0
or 4x^2-2x+18x-9=0
or 2x(2x-1)+9(2x-1)=0
or (2x-1)(2x+9)=0
x=1/2 , x=-9/2 ( impossible)
Hence, width of the uniform edge is 1/2 feet = 6inch
