Question 269609: In navigational terms, a bearing is defined as the number of degrees a direction is from due north clockwise. If a plane flying 120 mph has flown 1 hour at a bearing of 32°, how far has it flown in a horizontal direction?
Answer by Alan3354(69443)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Horizontal is a bearing of 090º = due east
The angle with the horizontal is 90 - 32 = 58º
Horizontal distance = 120*cos(58)
=~ 63.59 miles
----------------
The terminology used is not good. Plane flight that is not vertical (changing in altitude) is horizontal, regardless of heading.
