So you can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the hypotenuse, which is the vector here. a^2+b^2=c^2, so 8^2+(-4)^2=c^2, so c^2=64+16=80. So the magnitude of the vector is the square root of eighty, or about 8.9. (You could also have found this using the Distance Formula.)
