A baseball player hits a ball that reaches its maximum height of 40.5 ft when it is 150 feet from the plate,
it then strikes a scoreboard that is 270 feet from the plate at a height of 16.5 feet.
How many feet would the ball have traveled if it had not hit the scoreboard?
Since it's max height is reached at 150', (the axis of symmetry) the ball would have hit the ground 300' ft from the plate, if not stopped by the scoreboard
:
Assume the path of the ball can be modeled by a quadratic equation.
If the ballpark was larger, and the fence was 6 ft high and 300 feet from the plate, would this have been a homerun (Would the ball have gone over the fence)?
No, the ball would strike the ground at the base of the fence.
