x + 4 =-2
subtract 4 from both sides
x = -2 -4
x = -6
get rid of those negatives, multiply both sides by -1
x = 6
get rid of the fraction, multiply both sides by 4
4*x = 4*6
cancel on the left
3x = 24
divide both sides by 3
x = 24/3
x = 8

Confirm this in the original problem, replace x with 8
(8) + 4 =-2
three quarters of 8 is 6
-6 + 4 = -2
-2 = -2, confirms our solution
