I was shown the answer but don't understand why. The explanation didn't make sense, so I am looking for someone else who can explain why the answer is what it is.

It's the value of x that makes the denominator zero.
Dividing by zero is a VERY BAD THING.

1+2x = 0
x = -1/2 is not allowed
