Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let
x = number of games bought
y = total cost (computer + games)

The laptop costs $1,695.95. This is the fixed cost. It does not change based on the number of games bought.

The variable cost is the cost associated with the games bought. If you buy x games, then it will cost you x*19.95 = 19.95x dollars.

The total cost is therefore
y = 19.95x + 1695.95

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are given "A student who can afford to spend up to $2,200"

So 2200 dollars is the max amount allowed to be spent. Plug in y = 2200 and solve for x

y = 19.95x + 1695.95

2200 = 19.95x + 1695.95 ... replace y with 2200

2200 - 1695.95 = 19.95x + 1695.95 - 1695.95 ... Subtract 1695.95 from both sides.

504.05 = 19.95x

504.05/19.95 = 19.95x/19.95 ... Divide both sides by 19.95 to isolate x.

25.265664160401 = x

x = 25.265664160401

x = 25 ... round down to the nearest whole number

So this student can buy at most 25 games. If she bought 26 games, then she'd go over budget (notice how 19.95*26 + 1695.95 = $2,214.65 is larger than $2,200)
