Question 95953: Solve the system
xy+7=-x
x^2y=12

Answer by edjones(8007)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
xy+7=-x
subtract 7 from both sides. xy=-x-7
divide x into both sides. y=(-x-7)/x
x^2y=12
replace y with ((-x-7)/x)

cancel the x in the denominator with x^2.
x(-x-7)=12
-x^2-7x=12
subtract 12 from both sides. -x^2-7x-12=0
multiply -1 times both sides. x^2+7x+12=0
Factor. (x+3)(x+4)=0
x=-3 and x=-4
xy+7=-x
Substitute -3 for x. -3y+7=3
-3y=3-7=-4
y=4/3
1st solution set (-3,4/3)
check: x^2y=12
substitute -3 for x and 4/3 for y. 9*4/3=12
Substitute -4 for x. -4y+7=4
-4y=4-7=-3
y=3/4
2nd solution set (-4,3/4)
check: x^2y=12
substitute -4 for x and 3/4 for y. 16*3/4=12
Phew! Some are tougher than others.
