Question 765760: I need help solving the following inequality. 40x-39>40/x.
Would the solution set be -5/8 Also, part of the assignment is to determine if point x=0 is included in the solution set? I don't think it is.
Are there other finite end points included in the solution set?

inequality. 40x-39>40/x.
Would the solution set be -5/8 Also, part of the assignment is to determine if point x=0 is included in the solution set? I don't think it is.
Are there other finite end points included in the solution set?
--------------------------
40x - 39 > 40/x
------
40x - (40/x) > 39
----
(40x^2-40)/x > 39
-------
(x^2-1)/x > 39/40
Notice that x cannot be +1, -1, or 0
--------
Draw a number line and plot x = -1, 0, 1
-----
Test a value in each of the resulting intervals to find the solution set::::
Test x = -10:: 99/-10 > 39/40 :: false
Test x = -0.5:: (-3/4)/(-(1/2)) > 39/40 ;; true
Test x = +0.5:: (-3/4)/(1/2) > 39/40 :: false
Test x = 10:::: 99/10 > 39/40:: true
------------------
Solutions:: (-1,0)U(1,+oo)
