Question 739463: You and your friend are having a video game competition. The person with the highest score after two games wins. The table shows your friend's first and second scores and your first score.
Game #1: Friend's score: 6532, your score: 5034
Game #2: Friend's score: 4887, your score: ?
a)write and solve an inequality to find the scores s that you can earn in your second game in order to beat your friend
b) will you win if you earn 6392 points? 6385 points? 6377 points? justify your answers

Answer by fcabanski(1391)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
The sum of your scores must be greater than the sum of the friend's scores. Your second score is unknown, so call it x.

5034+x > 6532 +4887

5034+x > 11419: This is the inequality. Now solve it by subtracting 5034 from both sides.

x > 6385

Since x must be bigger than 6385, you won't win with 6385 (you'll tie) or 6377 (you'll lose). You win with 6392 because it is bigger than 6385.

5034+6392 > 6532 +4887

11426 > 11419 - you win.
