Question 7197: my daughter needs help with this question:
-2<=5-x<=2 the 5-x is over 3
thanks

Answer by Earlsdon(6294)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This is a compound inequality and is read as: (5-x)/3 is greater than or equal to -2 and is less than or equal to 2. For this compound inequality to be true, both inequalities must be true. If either one is false, then the compound inequality is false.
Try this:
Multiply everything by 3.
Subtract 5 from everything.
Divide everything by -1 (Don't forget to reverse the order of the <= signs)
This reads:
x is less than or equal to 11 and x is greater than or equal to -1
Check:
Let x = some integer between 11 and -1, say 2.

The compound inequality holds true for x = 2.
Now try a value for x that is outside the interval 11 to -1, say x = 14

One of the inequalities is false (-2 <= -3 is false), so the compound inequality is false.
