6y-10-y>14
.
You can treat this somewhat like an equation. What you want to do is get all the terms
containing y on the left side and all the numbers on the right side. Let's do it.
.
Get rid of the -10 on the left side by adding +10 to it. But if you add +10 to one side
you also have to add +10 to the other side.
.
When you do this the inequality becomes:
.
6y - 10 + 10 - y > 14 + 10
.
On the left side the +10 adds to the -10 to cancel out each other. And on the right side
the +10 adds to +14 to become +24. After these changes the inequality becomes:
.
6y -y > 24
.
On the left side you can combine the two y terms. Subtracting y from 6y results in an
answer of 5y and the inequality becomes:
.
5y > 24
.
Finally, you divide both sides by 5 so that only y is on the left side. The inequality
then becomes:
.
y > 24/5
.
And in decimals 24/5 = 4.8 which makes the inequality:
.
y > 4.8
.
This says that y is greater than 4.8 or 24/5, whichever you prefer.
.
Don't forget when you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative
number, you have to change the inequality sign so that it points in the opposite direction.
This does not apply to this particular problem, but you might run into a problem that you
will have to remember this.
.
I hope this gives you a little insight into working inequality problems.
