Find the length of the base of a triangle when one side is 2 cm shorter than
the base and the other side is 3 cm longer than the base. The perimeter is greater than 19 cm.
:
Let b = base; perimeter of a triangle: a + b + c > 19
:
"one side is 2 cm shorter than the base"
a = (b - 2)
:
"other side is 3 cm longer than the base"
c = (b + 3)
:
"The perimeter is greater than 19 cm."
a + b + c > 19
:
Substitute for a & c:
(b-2) + b + (b+3) > 19
3b - 2 + 3 > 19
3b + 1 > 19
3b > 19 - 1
3b > 18
b > 18/3
b > 6
