Let us solve the first one for x and substitute into the second one...we get
x + 2y =3
2x + y = 5
and
x = -2y + 3
and
2(-2y + 3) + y = 5
-4y + 6 + y = 5
-3y = -1
y = 1/3
then plugging this back into
x = -2y + 3
we get
x = -2/3 + 3
x = -2/3 + 9/3
x = 7/3
