Midtown Antiques collects 5% sales tax on all sales.
If total sales including tax are $1568.14, find the portion that is sales tax.
:
Find the amt of the actual sales, without the tax, it will make sense to you then
Let a = amt of sales
then
.05a = amt of the tax
:
sales amt + tax amt = total amt
a + .05a = 1568.14
1.05a = 1568.14
a =
a = $1493.47 amt of sales
:
Now we can find the amt of tax two ways
Subtract amt of sales from total amt
1568.14 - 1493.47 = $74.67 is the tax
:
or multiply amt of sales by .05
.05*1493.47 = $74.67 also
