x+y =89
x-y =13
...
add the equations
2x=89+13
2x=102
/2
x=51
..
x+y = 89
x=51
y=89-51
y=38
...
51 & 38 are the numbers

Sol'n:
let x & y - the numbers
x+y = 89 ---(1)
x-y = 13 ----(2)
Add, the 2 equations
2x = 102, divide by 2 on both side
x = 51
for y:
y = 89-x
= 89-51
y = 38
thus:
x = 51 & y = 38 ----answer
