Question 263172: This is for inequality word problems. I have a difficult time translating the problem. Here is the question that I need help on.
The sum of two consecutive integers is less than 35. What is the greatest possible pair?
Here is what I tried.
Let x = 1st integer
Let x + 1 = 2nd integer
x + x + 1 < 35
2x + 1 < 35
-1 -1
2/2x < 34/2 (I divided each side by 2)
x < 17
I got the two integers would be 17 and 18 but that is exactly 35 but it should be less than 35. So the correct answer would be 17 and 16 but that means I must have done my legend incorrectly. Please help. Thank you very much.

Actually everything is correct. However, notice you have as your last step
x < 17.
This means that you CAN NOT start with 17, so we start with
x = 16
now
x + 1 = 17, so
16 + 17 < 35.
the numbers are {16, 17}
