8x-(x-5) > x+17 means fully... 8x-1*(x-5) > x+17... the 1* is the important bit to know about. Why don't we write it? because we know it is there by not writing it! :-)
and then -1*x is -1x or just -x
and also -1*-5 is +5
so we have 8x-x+5 > x+17
or 7x+5 > x+17
so 6x+5 > 17
then 6x > 12
finally x > 12/6
giving x > 2
