If x and y are positive integers, x + y < 15, and x > 5, what is the greatest possible value of x–y ?
'
"When the most is added on and the least is subtracted
from it".
In other words, x-y would have to be at its greatest
possible value when x is its greatest possible value
and y is its smallest possible value.
`
That would be when x is 13 and y is 1, giving a maximum
value of x-y as 13-1 or 12.

As x must be a minimum of 6 then y must be at most 8. So y must be equal to or less than 8 but equal to or greater than 1 (as y must be a postive integer).
If y is at its least value of 1 then the maximum x can be is 13.
To get the biggest value from we want x to be the biggest it can and y to be the smallest. So and . So the greatest value of .
