Question 227418: This is in reference to Solving Multi-Step Inequalities.
What is the answer to the following problem (including steps):
10>6+y/5.
I attempted to solve the problem but I am not positive on how to do so therefore I have come up with the following answer: Y=4 this was because I subtracted 6 from both sides and then multiplied 4x5 which gave me the anser of 4???
Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
When you multiply both sides by 5, you get
10>6+y
Now you probably subtracted 6 from each side, but instead of getting y=4, you should get
10-6>6+y-6
4>y
This means the same as y<4, which means any number that is LESS than 4 (like 3, or 2, or 1, or 0, or any negative number!) This would be ALL numbers on the numberline that are to the LEFT of 4, but NOT including the 4.
For additional explanation on Inequalities, please see my own website. Do a "Bing" or "Google" search for my last name "Rapalje". Look for "Rapalje Homepage" near the top of these searches. Then near the top of my Homepage, look for "Basic, Intermediate and College Algebra". Choose "Basic Algebra", "Chapter 1", "Section 1.11 Inequalities".
