: I am really having a hard time with this problem. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me solve it. It is: The longest steel arch bridge in the world is the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville, West Virginia. The bridge is 1700 feet long. Write an inequality that describes the length l in (in feet) of any other steel arch bridge. Then graph the inequality. I really wish I could understand how to solve this better if anybody could help me solve it. Thanks! This question is from textbook Algebra 1 Concepts and Skills

Let L represent the length of every steel arch bridge in the world except for the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia. Then:

On the other hand, if you wanted to describe the length of every steel arch bridge in the world (including New River Gorge), then:

Of course, nothing said above is valid unless the contention that the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville, West Virginia, is, in fact, the longest steel arch bridge in the world and that the length of it is 1700 feet. Neither of these things are true. The length of the span is 1700 feet, but the length of the bridge is on the order of 3,000 feet. Furthermore, since completion in 2003, the Lupu Bridge, near Shanghai, People's Republic of China, has been number 1 both as to span and overall length, coming in at 1804 feet and nearly 13,000 feet respectively.
