Hello There:
Solving an inequality like this is very similar to solving an equation. You want to isolate the s on one side of the inequality symbol.
You may add or subtract amounts to and from each side. You may also multiply of divide both sides by an amount. NOTE: There is one important rule to remember! If you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative amount, then you MUST change the direction of the inequality symbol.
For example:
-3x < 2
To solve this, we need to divide both sides by -3. Since we are dividing by a negative amount, we have to remember to change the < symbol to >.
x > -2/3
----------------
s - 5 > -1
To isolate the s, we add 5 to both sides.
s + 5 - 5 > -1 + 5
s > 4
I'm not sure about the graphing part because I don't know if the name they chose for the variable corresponds to x or y.
If the name of the horizontal axis is called s, then you graph a vertical line that intersects the horizontal axis at 4. Make the line a dashed line because the points whose s-coordinates are not part of the solution. Since we have values greater than 4, you would shade the region to the right of the vertical dashed line.
If the name of the vertical axis is called s, then you graph a horizontal line that intersects the axis at s = 4. Again, the line should be dashed to show that the points that make up the line are not part of the graph. Shade the region above the dashed line because s is larger than 4.
