Question 166612: I am having trouble with solving and graphing inequalities the problem:
x+4>9 I came up with x=5 is that correct? Can you show me how you came up with your answer if mine is not correct

Answer by gonzo(654)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
you came up with the right answer.
almost.
the original equation is (x+4) > 9.
you subtract 4 from both sides of the equation to get
x > 5.
-----
you said x = 5 which is technically incorrect even though you had the right idea.
-----
when you graph this, however, you want to make the equation x = 5.
then, when you look at the graph, the area to the right of that equation is your answer (x > 5). the graph of the equation is the dividing line and does not include values to your answer. it would include the answer if the equation said x >= 5, but it does not.
-----
the graph of x = 5 is a straight vertical line at the x coordinate of 5.
anything to the right of that line is your answer (x > 5).
you would shade that area to show it to be where the answer lies.
