Question 15863: What rules are similar in solving inequalities and equations? What are the differences?

As I always explain, there are THREE rules for solving inequalities, as I explain in my Basic Algebra: One Step at a Time. I'm not sure if I have a lesson plan for this in algebra.com, but here is the rule anyway from my own website under Basic Algebra, Samples of Basic Algebra, Chapter 1, Section 1.11 Inequalities.

RULES FOR INEQUALITIES

Rule #1 If any number is added or subtracted from each side of an inequality, then the inequality sign remains the same.

Rule #2 If each side of an inequality is multiplied or divided by a positive number, then the inequality sign remains the same.

Rule #3 If each side of an inequality is multiplied or divided by a negative number, then the inequality sign must be reversed.

These rules are the same for EQUATIONS as for INEQUALITIES, EXCEPT for RULE #3, about multiplying or dividing both sides of an INEQUALITY by a NEGATIVE number. YOU MUST REVERSE THE INEQUALITY SIGN. Thet's the difference.
