: "Use the Addition Property and/or Multiplication Properties to find a and b. If -3 < x < 4, then a < x + 4 < b."
I have tried substituting the "if" equation in for x in the "then" equation, but just can't seem to get anywhere. The back of the book indicates that the correct answer is a=1 and b=8. I can't figure out how to move from an inequality to an answer with an equality.

-3 < x < 4
a < x + 4 < b

a=?
b=!

Simply take -3 < x < 4 and add 4 to all three "sides".

-3+4 < x+4 < 4+4

Simplify
1 < x+4 < 8

a < x+4 < b

Which numbers take the place of a and b? 1 and 8. Therefore:
a=1
b=8
