Question 1171128: Americans are buying more bottled water than ever before. At the time of this writing, the average American buys more bottled water than milk, coffee, or beer. In 2003, the average American purchased 76.4 gal of soft drinks and water. The amount of water was only 4.3 gal less than half of the amount of soft drinks.
How many gallons of water and how many soft drinks did the average American buy in 2003?
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x= amt h2o
and y=amt soft drinks
then
x+y=76.4-----eq1
and
x=(1/2y-4.3)---eq2
replace x in eq1
1/2y-4.3+y=76.4
simplify
3/2y=80.7
y=53.8
sub in eq1
x=22.6
ck
22.6=(1/2)53.8-4.8
22.6=22.6
hope this helps
