Question 220655: The ratio of Ed's car was 5:2 at first. After Ed gave 30 cars to Pete, they each owned an equal amount of cars. How many cars did they have altogether.
I solve the problem but the answer seem wrong when I retest. here is my equation:
5:2
5x - 30= 2x (because Ed gave 30 cars to P : 5x-30)
5x -2x = 30
3x= 30
x= 10
Then I retest x=10 but the number was wrong 50:20 but Ed gave 30 cars to Pete.
Please help,. Thank you so much. Brian.

Question 227616: If the number of degrees in the measure of one angle of a triangle is represented by 4x and the measure of a second angle is represented by y, what expression would represent the measure of the third angle?
My answer
1st angle = 4x
2nd angle = y
I’ll let x represent the 3rd angle
4x + (y + x) = 180
4x + y + x = 180 (-4x) + y I added 4x to both sides
+4x +4x
8x + y + x=180 + y I added -y to both sides
-y -y
8x + x = 180 I added 'x' to 8x
9x = 180 I divided both sides by 9
9 9
x=20
Check
4(20) + y + 20= 180
‘y’ must represent 60
Am I right?

Question 229957: Sam has 5 more dimes than quarters and four less nickels than quarters. If he has 34 coins, how many of each does he have? I started with # of dimes x + 5, # of quarters is x, # of nickels is x-4. I formed this equation .10(x+5) + .25x + .05 (x+4) = 34, then I multiplied by 100 to get 10x + 50 + 25x + 5x +20 = 34, 40x + 30 =34. I have no idea what I'm doing.
