a + b = 9 or b = 9 - a
and
a^2 - ab + b^2 = 21
a^2 - a(9 - a) + (9 - a)^2 = 21
a^2 - 9a + a^2 + 81 - 18a + a^2 = 21
3a^2 - 27a + 60 = 0
3a^2 - 12a - 15a + 60 = 0
(3a^2 - 12a) + (-15a + 60) = 0
3a(a - 4) - 15(a - 4) = 0
(3a - 15)(a - 4) = 0
a = 4 or a = 15/3
a = 4 ... b = 9 - a = 9 - 4 = 5
45 ... or 54 because a and b are interchangeable
a = 15/3 = 5 ...
