Question 903330: if 4 is subtracted from twice a number, the result is 36. Find the number
Answer by tutoringisfun(17) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
from the problem we get the following:
2x-4=36
to solve for x, we want to get x all by iself. Therefore, we must add 4 to each side and divide each side by 2.
2x-4+4=36+4 the 4's on the left side cancel each other out because they equal 0. That gives us 2x=40, now we divide both sides by 2 thus
2x/2=40/2 this causes the 2 on the left to cancel out leaving us with one x on the left side which is what we wanted and 40/2 on the right side.
x=40/2 now all we have to do is 40/2=20. Therefore, the answer is 20. If you want to check it you can plug 20 back into the equation for x as follows:
2(20)-4=36
40-4=36 this is true so the answer is correct. If you need long term help or more in depth help please check out my website as listed in my profile or on twitter @mstngmom1. Thanks.
