Question 878408: "How do you solve this word problem?"
It costs $13.50 to take Mary out for the evening. Sixty percent of this cost of this total was for theater tickets. What was the cost of each ticket? Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
60% of $13.50 is found by multiplying 13.5 times 0.6. But that is the total cost of all the tickets. So if it was just you and Mary, then you would divide that result by 2, but if Mary's mother made her little sister go along because she didn't trust you alone with Mary in a dark theater, then you would have to divide by 3. Since 60% of the total cost is evenly divisible by both 2 and 3, either situation is possible.
