This is just a matter of solving for x! 1 + x = 3 + x --- subtract 1 from both sides 1 + x - 1 = 3 + x - 1 x = 2 + x ---- subtract x from both sides x - x = 2 --- find the common denominator x - x = 2 x = 2 x = 2 ---- multiply both sides by 12 12 * x = 2 * 12 and ultimately x = 24.
