Hi,

One number is 3 less than a second number 

Twice the second number is  5 less than 3 times the first.

Translating 2nd statement into an equation: 

    2x = 3y - 5     |||  From 1st statement

     2x = 3(x-3) - 5

    2x = 3x - 9 - 5

     14 = x  and y = 11
