Question 570922: "On January 15, 1972 in Loma, Montana, the temperature rose from -54 degrees F to 49 degrees F over a 24 hour period. How many degrees did the temperature rise all together? Solve the problem by setting up an equation in which a negative number is subtracted."
I know the answer but I cannot agree how to set up the equation. I know it's not as simple as 54 + 49 and that I have to subtract a negative number, but isn't that the same as adding a positive anyway? My brain was never meant for algebra. I would really appreciate some help with putting this word prob into an equation. Thanks!

You're right: 49 - (-54) would be 49 + 54
