total of 4 times the number and 38 would be equal to:
4x + 38
half of that would be equal to:
2x + 19
assume the number is 9.
4*9 = 36 + 38 = 74
half of that is equal to 37
2*9 + 19 = 18 + 19 = 37
looks like the equivalent expression 2x + 19 is good.
that's my interpretation.
these can get tricky dependent on the way they're worded.
total of applies to 4 times the number and to 38 which is why i interpreted it as 4*x + 38
