An equation with two variables usually represents the graph of a line. In order to "solve" the equations, you need TWO equations, which would represent TWO lines, that USUALLY intersect in a point. Solving the equations means that you are trying to find the point where the lines cross, if indeed they cross in a point. It is also possible that the lines do NOT cross in a point. They could be parallel lines, in which case there is no solution. A third possibility is that both equations could actually represent the SAME line. In this case, the entire line is considered to be the solution.
