Question 44111: Hello, I am having difficulty determining the what should constitute my x and y variables. The goal is to create two linear equations, graph them, and determine what point or intersection on the graph correctly answers the question. I have tried setting x as amount deposited in Wachovia and y as amount deposited in CCB and I end up with the equations 14x+8y=22000 and 7x+15y=22000. I know these are wrong but I am stumped please help?
Problem:
Mr. jones wants to invest up to $22000. He will invest at least $2000 but no more than $14000 in Wachovia, and he willinvest no more than $15000 in CCB. What amounts placed in these accounts will yeild the greatest income(interest)? What is the maximum interest?
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let W be the Wachovia investment and C be the CCB investment.
Then
W>=2000 and W<=14000
C<=15000
W+C<=22000
Set up a coordinate system with vertical axis W and horizontal axis C.
Plot the inequalities of the coordinate system.
Determine the intersection of the equality lines.
I get points at (0,14000) (8000,14000)
(0,2000) and (15000,2000)
You didn't post an interest statement so we can't
tell which combination yields the most interest.
Cheers,
Stan H.
