A Farmhouse shelters 10 animals. some are pigs and some are ducks. Altogether there are 36 legs. How many of each animal are there? Answer: 8 pigs and 2 ducks.
1. (A) p + d = 10
2. (B) 4p + 2d = 36
3. Multiply equation (A) with -2; -2p minus -2d = -20
4. When subtracted from equation (B), this gives you.. 2p = 16, pigs = 8
5. Use this 8 to the second equation by substitution.. 2d = 4, ducks = 2
