-3x = 27
you isolate the variable ( I do this by circling it, and then you know which side to be working on) Then perform the opposite operation on both sides of the equal sign. This time it will be dividing, since 3x means 3 times x
-3x = 27

-3 -3
The multiplying and dividing by -3, cancel each other out, so you are just left with x
x= -9
then to check..subsitute the -9, where the x is, and check.
