Question 36000: My question is written on a handout from my teacher. She wants us to show a formula and solve the question step by step can you help me out?
Problem:: IF 1 year is subtracted from Stanley's present age, and this result is squared, the present age of his aunt is decribed. Two years from now, his aunt's age will be six times Stanley's age then. Find their present ages.

So far my teacher told me to formula's and said they might work. they are
S(squared)-2S+3=6(s+2) the next formula is (s-1)(squared)+2=6s
i have tryed solving both here is my work.
s(squared)-2s+3=6(s+2)
S(squared)-2s+3=6s+12
S(sqaured)-2s-9=6s
S(squared)-8s-9
which when u make a box and an X for that s comes to equal both 1 and -9 but when u plug those in they do not work for the problem..
The other equation you are not able to use a box or X on because,
(s-1)(squared)+2=6s
S(squared)-2s-1+2=6s
S(squared)-2s+1=6s
S(squared)-8s+1=0
so can you help me out please by tonight??

THE FIRST EQUATION IS CORRECT THUS S~2-2S+3=6(S+2) OR S~2-2S+3=6S+12 OR
S~2-8S-9=0 OR (S-9)(S+1)=0 OR S-9=0 OR S=9 ALSO S+1=0 OR S=-1 (NOT AN ANSWER)
S=9 YEARS OLD THE AUNT IS (9-1)~2 OR 8~2 OR 64 YEARS OLD
IN 2 YEARS STANLEY WILL BE 11 AND HIS AUNT WILL BE 66 OR 6*11=66
