The cost of a telephone call is 75 cents plus 25 cents times the number of minutes.

Let cost of lunch be Y dollars
Let number of people at the table be X
the cost of lunch is $5.50 times number of people
therefore Y = 5.5x
similarly let cost of telephone call be Y cents
Let the number of minutes be X
then according to the problem to cost is 75 cents plus 25 cents times number of minutes
Y = 75 +25x
