2 people share a winning lottery ricket woth $1200.
one person received $800 less than three times what the other person received. How much did each person receive.
---
Equations:
a + b = 1200
a = 3b-800
---------------------
Substitute for "a" and solve for "b":
3b-800 + b = 1200
4b = 2000
b = $500 (amount one of the persons received)
---
Since a = 3b-800, a = 3*500-800 = $700 (amount the other person received)
